About This Artwork

In the summer of 1845, George Caleb Bingham returned to his St. Louis home from a winter stay in central Missouri, bringing with him several paintings and sketches. This masterpiece, originally titled "French Trader & Half breed Son", was later renamed "Fur Traders Descending the Missouri" by the American Art-Union. The tranquil scene, with its luminous atmosphere, idealized the American frontier for Eastern audiences and remains one of the most iconic depictions of 19th-century American life.
